Chica Boyriven, Franco-Brazilian artist, passionate about popular arts, pays tribute here to Cordel's literature.
This kind of Brazilian literature, mainly from the Northeast region, is printed on small booklets and sold in the markets, bounded with strings or ropes ("corda"). Hence its name "Cordel".
The rhyming poems published in these booklets are inspired by everyday facts or current affairs, often with a great deal of humor. Woodcuts made by local artists illustrate the covers.
Inspired by this popular aesthetic, Chica Boyriven's linocuts display here, in dreamlike form, her daily life, her dreams, her life as a woman. These works have been judiciously chosen to punctuate the documentary “Etoiles” by Pamela Valente, which recounts the odyssey and the destiny of Brazilian women who immigrated to France.
