La Manuela is a film about exile and self-reinvention. In August 2015, Manuela Picq Lavinas, a Franco-Brazilian journalist and university professor, was arrested at a demonstration in Quito, Ecuador. That same night, her work visa was revoked, and she was taken to a detention center. She had to leave Ecuador, the country where she had lived for the past ten years, leaving behind her home, her work, and her love story.
