The film is about people who make a living by picking through trash on the streets of Rio de Janeiro in search of recyclable material, popularly known as donkeys without a tail. Portuguese immigrants to Brazil made their living pushing wooden carts down the street to collect bottles. Today these trash collectors work with a wide variety of materials: plastics, glass, iron, copper, paper, and cardboard. By following the daily routine of five of these donkeys without a tail we come into contact with a universe that is ever-present in Brazilian cities but little understood.
